Bridge the gap toward true fluency. Practice grammar, vocabulary, kanji, and reading for JLPT N3 — all in one place.
What is JLPT N3?
JLPT N3 is the bridge between the basic levels (N4–N5) and the advanced levels (N1–N2), testing the ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree. It covers roughly 650 kanji and 3,750 vocabulary words. Many learners treat N3 as the point where they can start engaging with unadapted, everyday Japanese media, after around 450–600 hours of study.

How to apply for the JLPT
The JLPT is held twice a year in most countries — usually in July and December — though some test sites only offer one sitting per year. Registration typically opens two to four months before the test date through the official JLPT administrator for your country or region.
- Create an account on your region's official JLPT registration website and choose your test level and test center.
- Pay the exam fee online (fees and accepted payment methods vary by country).
- Upload a recent passport-style photo if your test site requires one.
- Download and print your admission ticket once registration closes.
On the day of the exam, bring your admission ticket, a valid photo ID, and pencils and an eraser — dictionaries, phones, and other aids aren't allowed in the exam room. Results are usually published online two to three months after the test, and candidates who pass receive an official Certificate of Proficiency by mail. Registration deadlines and requirements vary by country, so always check your local JLPT administrator's website for the exact details.
