Pattern

Adding か to the ます form makes a polite yes/no question in the present or future. Adding か to ました makes a polite yes/no question about the past.

Use ますか for actions now or in the future, and ましたか for past actions. Answers usually repeat the verb in positive or negative form.

Verb stem + ますか (present/future) / Verb stem + ましたか (past)

明日も学校へ行きますか。

あしたもがっこうへいきますか。

Will you go to school tomorrow?

はい、行きます。

はい、いきます。

Yes, I will.

きのう映画を見ましたか。

きのうえいがをみましたか。

Did you watch a movie yesterday?

いいえ、見ませんでした。

いいえ、みませんでした。

No, I didn’t.

この本を読みましたか。

このほんをよみましたか。

Did you read this book?

はい、全部読みました。

はい、ぜんぶよみました。

Yes, I read it all.
