Explanation
Used to connect two sentences softly, often before making a request, question, or changing the topic. The 'が' here does not keep its usual 'but' meaning.
Usage
Common in polite speech when starting with an apology or an opening phrase before the main sentence.

Examples
すみませんが、駅はどちらですか。
すみませんが、えきは どちらですか。Excuse me, but where is the station?
失礼ですが、この席は空いていますか。
しつれいですが、この せきは あいていますか。Pardon me, but is this seat free?
申し訳ありませんが、今日は行けません。
もうしわけありませんが、きょうは いけません。I’m sorry, but I can’t go today.
