Pattern

Indicates the person or recipient to whom something is given, lent, taught, etc.

Use に after the person or recipient before the verb to indicate the direction of giving, lending, teaching, etc.

Recipient (person) + に + Verb

母にプレゼントをあげました。

ははにプレゼントをあげました。

I gave my mother a present.

友達にペンを貸しました。

ともだちにペンをかしました。

I lent my friend a pen.

妹に日本語を教えます。

いもうとににほんごをおしえます。

I teach my younger sister Japanese.

先生に手紙を送りました。

せんせいにてがみをおくりました。

I sent a letter to my teacher.

会社に電話をかけます。

かいしゃにでんわをかけます。

I will call my office.
