Pattern

Marks the subject inside a clause that describes a noun. Used in relative clauses to give more detail about the noun.

Use が for the subject of the descriptive clause before the noun. The clause works like an adjective for the noun.

[subject] が + [verb/adjective clause] + [noun]

これは山田さんが育てた花です。

これはやまださんがそだてたはなです。

This is the flower that Mr. Yamada grew.

わたしは友だちが撮った写真を大事にしています。

わたしはともだちがとったしゃしんをだいじにしています。

I treasure the photo my friend took.

彼が書いた本はとても人気があります。

かれがかいたほんはとてもにんきがあります。

The book he wrote is very popular.

あなたは猫が遊んでいる公園を知っていますか。

あなたはねこがあそんでいるこうえんをしっていますか。

Do you know the park where the cat is playing?

小学生が作ったポスターが校門にはってあります。

しょうがくせいがつくったポスターがこうもんにはってあります。
