- 普通形 + と言っていました
Explanation
Used to report something that someone said in the past. The speaker is passing on information they heard directly from another person. In questions, なんと may be used for 'what'.
Usage
Connects the quoted content to the verb 言っていました to indicate reported speech from the past.
Formation
Attach と言っていました to the plain form of the sentence being reported.
Examples
田中さんは来週から出張だと言っていました。
たなかさんはらいしゅうからしゅっちょうだといっていました。Tanaka said he will be on a business trip from next week.
先生は今日は宿題がないと言っていました。
せんせいはきょうはしゅくだいがないといっていました。The teacher said there is no homework today.
山田さんは何と言っていましたか。
