Explanation

Indicates that something has been decided, regardless of the speaker’s personal volition. Can also be used when the decision is based on the speaker’s volition but they do not want to state this directly.

Usage

〜になります is used for changes to a state or schedule. 〜ことになります is used for decisions or arrangements that have been made, often implying they were decided by someone else or by circumstances.

Formation

For state changes: 名詞 + になります. For decisions: 動詞辞書形／ない形 + ことになります.

Examples

入学式は4月10日になります。

にゅうがくしきはしがつとおかになります。

The entrance ceremony will be on April 10th.

来月から新しい規則を守ることになります。

らいげつからあたらしいきそくをまもることになります。

From next month, it will be required to follow the new rules.

天気が悪ければ、試合は中止することになります。

てんきがわるければ、しあいはちゅうしすることになります。

If the weather is bad, the match will be canceled.
