Explanation
Both forms express that a decision about an action has been made, but they differ in who made the decision.
Usage
〜ことにします indicates a decision made voluntarily by the speaker. 〜ことになります indicates a decision made by someone else, by rules, or by circumstances, even if the speaker agrees with it.
Formation
Attach ことにします or ことになります to the dictionary or negative form of the verb.
Examples
私は毎朝ジョギングをすることにします。
わたしはまいあさジョギングをすることにします。I’ve decided to go jogging every morning.
来月から全員が制服を着ることになりました。
らいげつからぜんいんがせいふくをきることになりました。Starting next month, everyone will be required to wear uniforms.
私はコーヒーを飲まないことにしました。
わたしはコーヒーをのまないことにしました。I’ve decided not to drink coffee.
天気が悪いので、試合は中止することになりました。
