Casual pattern meaning “if (I/you) don’t …, (bad) consequences will follow,” or “I/you must ….”

Used to remind oneself or nudge someone to take necessary action; common in spoken, informal contexts.

Attach と to the negative (ない) form of the verb.

雨が降りそうだから、洗濯物を取り込まないと。

あめがふりそうだから、せんたくものをとりこまないと。

Looks like rain — gotta bring the laundry in.

明日は早く起きないと、バスに間に合わないよ。

あしたははやくおきないと、バスにまにあわないよ。

If you don’t get up early tomorrow, you’ll miss the bus.

資料を早く作らないと、会議に間に合わない。

しりょうをはやくつくらないと、かいぎにまにあわない。

I need to prepare the materials quickly or I won’t make the meeting.
