Explanation
Indicates that while something might appear to be the case or could be assumed from the situation, it is not entirely true. The phrase negates only part of the statement.
Usage
Used to correct a possible misunderstanding or overgeneralization, often softening the negation compared to a direct 'not'.
Formation
Attach to the plain form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, and nouns.
Examples
甘い物が嫌いなわけではないが、あまり食べないようにしている。
あまいものがきらいなわけではないが、あまりたべないようにしている。It’s not that I dislike sweets, but I try not to eat them often.
全ての本を読んだというわけではない。
すべてのほんをよんだというわけではない。It’s not that I’ve read all the books.
彼が悪い人なのではないと思う。
かれがわるいひとなのではないとおもう。I don’t think he is a bad person.
