Pattern

Used to express that something is possible or true to some extent, though not strongly. A mild affirmation using a double negative.

Often used to avoid making a strong statement or to express reluctance while still acknowledging possibility.

Attach to the negative form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, or nouns.

彼の提案が理解できないことはないが、まだ賛成する気にはなれない。

かれのていあんがりかいできないことはないが、まださんせいするきにはなれない。

It’s not that I can’t understand his proposal, but I’m not ready to agree yet.

辛い料理が食べられないことはないが、あまり得意ではない。

からいりょうりがたべられないことはないが、あまりとくいではない。

It’s not that I can’t eat spicy food, but I’m not very good with it.

この問題は解けないことはないけれど、かなり時間がかかるだろう。

このもんだいはとけないことはないけれど、かなりじかんがかかるだろう。

It’s not that this problem can’t be solved, but it will probably take a lot of time.
