Explanation
Used to acknowledge that something is true, but to then downplay its importance or contrast it with another fact.
Usage
This structure often appears in conversations where the speaker admits a fact but shifts focus to a different point, implying that the acknowledged fact is not decisive.
Formation
Attach 'ことは' to the plain form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, or nouns. Follow with 'が' and the contrasting statement.
Examples
彼の話を聞いたことは聞いたが、内容はあまり覚えていない。
かれのはなしをきいたことはきいたが、ないようはあまりおぼえていない。I did hear his story, but I don’t remember much of the content.
この映画は面白いことは面白いが、長すぎて少し退屈になる。
このえいがはおもしろいことはおもしろいが、ながすぎてすこしたいくつになる。The movie is interesting, but it’s so long that it gets a bit boring.
運転できることはできるが、長距離は疲れる。
うんてんできることはできるが、ちょうきょりはつかれる。I can drive, but long distances are tiring.
