Explanation
A colloquial, informal expression meaning 'I heard that...' or 'They say...'. It is a shortened form of ~と言っている or ~と聞いた, and is often used in spoken conversation.
Usage
Used to convey reported speech or hearsay in a casual way. Can also directly attach to the quoted phrase without verbs like 言う or 聞く being explicitly stated.
Formation
Attach って to the plain form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, and nouns. The following verb (e.g., 言っている, 聞いた) can be omitted in casual conversation.
Examples
田中さん、来週から海外に行くんだって。
たなかさん、らいしゅうからかいがいにいくんだって。They say Tanaka is going abroad from next week.
このケーキ屋さん、新しくオープンしたんだって。
このけーきやさん、あたらしくおーぷんしたんだって。I heard that this cake shop just opened.
山本君、先生に呼ばれてるって。
やまもとくん、せんせいによばれてるって。They say Yamamoto is being called by the teacher.
