Explanation
Indicates that a certain way of putting something is more appropriate than another.
Usage
Used to say 'rather than...' or 'would say it is more like...'. It highlights that the expression following というより is a more fitting description than the one preceding it.
Formation
Attach というより after the word or phrase being compared.
Examples
彼は友達というより、仕事の良きライバルだ。
かれはともだちというより、しごとのよきらいばるだ。He is more of a good work rival than a friend.
今日は寒いというより、むしろ冷たい風が刺さるようだ。
きょうはさむいというより、むしろつめたいかぜがささるようだ。Today, rather than just being cold, it feels like the icy wind is piercing through.
彼女は歌手というより、詩人として知られている。
かのじょはかしゅというより、しじんとしてしられている。She is known more as a poet than a singer.
これは失敗というより、学びの機会だった。
