Explanation
Indicates 'in exchange for', 'instead of', or 'on the other hand'. Can also express refraining from an action that is usually done and doing something else equivalent instead.
Usage
Used to show compensation, replacement, or a balancing contrast between two actions or states.
Formation
Attach かわりに to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, or nominal expressions (ナ形だ・である).
Examples
兄は私の宿題を手伝ってくれるかわりに、夕食の準備を頼んできた。
あにはわたしのしゅくだいをてつだってくれるかわりに、ゆうしょくのじゅんびをたのんできた。My brother helped me with my homework in exchange for asking me to prepare dinner.
週末は仕事をしないかわりに、平日に残業をしている。
しゅうまつはしごとをしないかわりに、へいじつにざんぎょうをしている。Instead of working on weekends, I work overtime on weekdays.
彼は外食を控えるかわりに、家で豪華な料理を作って楽しんでいる。
かれはがいしょくをひかえるかわりに、いえでごうかなりょうりをつくってたのしんでいる。Instead of eating out, he enjoys cooking luxurious meals at home.
彼女は旅行に行くかわりに、新しいパソコンを買うことにした。
かのじょはりょこうにいくかわりに、あたらしいぱそこんをかうことにした。She decided to buy a new computer instead of going on a trip.
