Explanation
Used to convey information that the speaker has heard or learned from another source. It is slightly more formal than 〜そうだ.
Usage
〜ということだ is used for general reported speech. 〜とのことだ is often used when the information comes from a specific individual or in written communication, such as letters.
Formation
Attach to the plain form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, and nouns. Often paired with expressions like 〜では, 〜によると, or 〜によれば to indicate the source of the information.
Examples
天気予報によると、明日は雪になるということだ。
てんきよほうによると、あしたはゆきになるということだ。According to the weather forecast, it will snow tomorrow.
山田さんからのメールによれば、来週は出張とのことです。
やまださんからのメールによれば、らいしゅうはしゅっちょうとのことです。According to an email from Mr. Yamada, he will be on a business trip next week.
ニュースによれば、その映画は国際的に高く評価されているということだ。
ニュースによれば、そのえいがはこくさいてきにたかくひょうかされているということだ。According to the news, the movie has been highly praised internationally.
