Explanation
Expresses the cause of a negative result, meaning 'because of'.
Usage
Used when attributing a negative outcome to a specific cause, often with a nuance of blame. Cannot be used for sentences expressing hope, intention, or requests.
Formation
Attach to nouns (with の) or verbs/adjectives in plain form. For na-adjectives, use な before せい.
Examples
電車が遅れたせいで、会議に間に合わなかった。
でんしゃがおくれたせいで、かいぎにまにあわなかった。Because the train was delayed, I didn’t make it to the meeting in time.
昨夜寝不足だったせいで、今日はずっと眠い。
さくやねぶそくだったせいで、きょうはずっとねむい。Because I didn’t sleep enough last night, I’ve been sleepy all day.
