Explanation
Indicates the cause, reason, or means by which something happens.
Usage
When used to indicate a cause or reason, it cannot be used with sentences that express a state or when the speaker is expressing hope, intention, or trying to induce another person to action. When used to indicate means or method, it simply describes how something is done. Slightly formal expression.
Formation
Attach によって or による directly to a noun.
Examples
材料不足によって、この工場の生産は停止した。
ざいりょうぶそくによって、このこうじょうのせいさんはていしした。Due to a shortage of materials, production at this factory has stopped.
この作品は、有名な作家によるものだ。
このさくひんは、ゆうめいなさっかによるものだ。This work is by a famous author.
外国語を学ぶことによって、新しい価値観を得ることができる。
がいこくごをまなぶことによって、あたらしいかちかんをえることができる。By learning a foreign language, you can gain new perspectives.
このプロジェクトは政府によって支援されている。
このぷろじぇくとはせいふによってしえんされている。This project is supported by the government.
