Pattern

Indicates the agent in passive sentences or the means/method by which something is done. Often used when the subject is inanimate.

Used in passive constructions to mark the doer, or to express the means, cause, or reason.

Attach によって to a noun.

この橋は有名な建築家によって設計された。

このはしはゆうめいなけんちくかによってせっけいされた。

This bridge was designed by a famous architect.

このお祭りは地域の人々によって守られてきた。

このおまつりはちいきのひとびとによってまもられてきた。

This festival has been preserved by the local people.

新しい法律によって、利用者の安全が守られるようになった。

あたらしいほうりつによって、りようしゃのあんぜんがまもられるようになった。

Due to the new law, user safety is now protected.
