Pattern
- 普通形（ナ形・名詞 + 〜である） + （の）なら
Explanation
Used when the speaker makes certain assumptions, for example based on another person’s remarks or appearance.
Usage
Often expresses the speaker's judgment, intention, or to try to induce another person to an action. Cannot be used with expressions describing a state that the speaker directly experiences without prior information.
Formation
Attach （の）なら to the plain form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, or nouns. For na-adjectives and nouns, the 'の' is omitted.
Examples
このペン、もう使わないのですか。使わないなら私にください。
このぺん、もうつかわないのですか。つかわないならわたしにください。You’re not using this pen anymore? If you’re not, please give it to me.
ああ、明日は雪か。雪なら山登りはやめたほうがいいね。
ああ、あしたはゆきか。ゆきならやまのぼりはやめたほうがいいね。Oh, it’s going to snow tomorrow? If it snows, we’d better not go hiking.
その雑誌、読み終わったのなら私に貸してくれませんか。
そのざっし、よみおわったのならわたしにかしてくれませんか。If you’ve finished reading that magazine, could you lend it to me?
