Explanation
Used mainly in written instructions, cautions, or rules to indicate that something must or must not be done.
Usage
Commonly seen in official notices, rules in schools or workplaces, and posted warnings. It is a more formal and impersonal style, not used in casual speech.
Formation
Attach こと directly to the dictionary form for things that must be done, and to the negative form for things that must not be done.
Examples
提出期限を守ること。
ていしゅつきげんをまもること。Submit by the deadline.
試験中は私語をしないこと。
しけんちゅうはしごをしないこと。No talking during the exam.
工事現場ではヘルメットを着用すること。
こうじげんばではヘルメットをちゃくようすること。Wear a helmet at the construction site.
