Explanation
Expresses that the more one thing happens, the more another thing happens, or the greater one condition is, the greater another becomes.
Usage
Used to show a proportional relationship between two things or situations. Often used for changes, trends, or intensities.
Formation
Attach to the conditional form of verbs and adjectives, or directly to nouns followed by ほど.
Examples
経験を積めば積むほど、自信がついてくる。
けいけんをつめばつむほど、じしんがついてくる。The more experience you gain, the more confident you become.
この料理はゆっくり煮込むほど、味が深くなる。
このりょうりはゆっくりにこむほど、あじがふかくなる。The more slowly you simmer this dish, the richer the flavor becomes.
山は登れば登るほど、景色が美しくなる。
やまはのぼればのぼるほど、けしきがうつくしくなる。The higher you climb the mountain, the more beautiful the view becomes.
