Pattern

Shows a contrasting side: while one aspect is true, the opposite aspect also exists.

Used to present two sides of one thing or situation, like '... but on the other hand ...'. Often pairs positives with negatives.

Attach 反面 to verbs in plain form, i-adjectives, na-adjectives, or nouns with である.

在宅勤務は時間を自由に使える反面、仕事と私生活の区別がつきにくい。

ざいたくきんむはじかんをじゆうにつかえるはんめん、しごととしせいかつのくべつがつきにくい。

Working from home lets you use your time freely; on the other hand, it’s hard to separate work and private life.

この街は自然が豊かな反面、交通の便がよくない。

このまちはしぜんがゆたかなはんめん、こうつうのべんがよくない。

This town is rich in nature; on the other hand, transportation is inconvenient.

自由な校風である反面、自己管理が求められる。

じゆうなこうふうであるはんめん、じこかんりがもとめられる。

The school has a free atmosphere; on the other hand, self-management is required.

新品は安心できる反面、値段が高い。

しんぴんはあんしんできるはんめん、ねだんがたかい。

New products give peace of mind; on the other hand, they are expensive.
