Pattern

Explanation

Used in hypothetical or unrealized situations to express what would have happened if a certain condition had been met.

Usage

Often appears with endings like 〜た, 〜のだが, 〜のに to indicate that the condition was not met and the result did not occur.

Formation

Use the conditional forms 〜ば, 〜たら, or 〜なら depending on the word type. Can also be combined with past tense for counterfactual statements.

Examples

もっと早く出発していれば、渋滞に巻き込まれなかったのに。

もっとはやくしゅっぱつしていれば、じゅうたいにまきこまれなかったのに。

If we had left earlier, we wouldn’t have gotten stuck in traffic.

昨日晴れていたら、もっと外で遊べたのに。

きのうはれていたら、もっとそとであそべたのに。

If it had been sunny yesterday, we could have played outside more.

あなたが手伝ってくれれば、この仕事は早く終わるでしょう。

あなたがてつだってくれれば、このしごとははやくおわるでしょう。
