- Vない形 + ずじまいだ
Explanation
Expresses regret that something was never done in the end, despite wanting or planning to do it. The opportunity is now gone.
Usage
Used for past situations that ended without the intended or hoped-for action being carried out. Often expresses a sense of missed opportunity or disappointment.
Formation
Attach to the negative stem of a verb (Vない form without ない, e.g., '書か' + ずじまいだ). For する, use せずじまいだ.
Examples
映画を観ようと思っていたのに、忙しくて行けずじまいだった。
えいがをみようとおもっていたのに、いそがしくていけずじまいだった。I was planning to watch the movie, but I was too busy and ended up not going.
彼に本当の気持ちを伝えられずじまいで卒業してしまった。
かれにほんとうのきもちをつたえられずじまいでそつぎょうしてしまった。I graduated without ever being able to tell him how I really felt.
その本は気になっていたが、とうとう読まずじまいだった。
そのほんはきになっていたが、とうとうよまずじまいだった。I was curious about that book, but ended up never reading it.
