〜ざるを得ない

Pattern

Used to express that someone is forced to do something against their will — 'cannot avoid doing'.

Often used in formal or written contexts to show unavoidable obligation. For 'する', use 'せざるを得ない'.

Attach to the ない-form of a verb without 'ない'. Use 'せざるを得ない' for 'する'.

このままだとプロジェクトを延期せざるを得ない状況になるだろう。

このままだとぷろじぇくとをえんきせざるをえないじょうきょうになるだろう。

At this rate, we’ll probably have no choice but to postpone the project.

健康のためには、好きでも甘いものを控えざるを得ない。

けんこうのためには、すきでもあまいものをひかえざるをえない。

For the sake of my health, I have to cut back on sweets even though I like them.
