Explanation
Indicates that there is no way or method to do something. It expresses that something is completely impossible to do, even if one wants to.
Usage
Used to express that there is no means or possibility of taking an action. Strong nuance of impossibility. Often paired with verbs of communication, action, or problem-solving.
Formation
Attach to the verb stem (ます-form without ます).
Examples
連絡先がわからなければ、知らせようがない。
れんらくさきがわからなければ、しらせようがない。If I don’t know the contact information, there’s no way to inform them.
彼の説明は曖昧すぎて、理解しようがなかった。
かれのせつめいはあいまいすぎて、りかいしようがなかった。His explanation was too vague; there was no way to understand it.
証拠がなければ、この話を信じるようがない。
しょうこがなければ、このはなしをしんじるようがない。Without any evidence, there's no way to believe this story.
全部試してみたが、どうしても解決しようがなかった。
ぜんぶためしてみたが、どうしてもかいけつしようがなかった。I tried everything, but there was no way to solve it.
