Used to express that the current situation does not allow for something, even if one wanted to do it. Often conveys lack of time, money, or a calm environment.

Usage

Used when expectations or intentions are impossible to fulfill due to external conditions. Often paired with words expressing leisure, enjoyment, or plans.

Formation

Attach to nouns or the dictionary form of verbs.

Examples

忙しすぎて、旅行どころではない。

いそがしすぎて、りょこうどころではない。

I’m way too busy — a trip is out of the question.

風邪がひどくて、映画を見に行くどころではなかった。

かぜがひどくて、えいがをみにいくどころではなかった。

I had such a bad cold that I couldn't even think about going to the movies.

引っ越し直後で、のんびりするどころではない。

ひっこしちょくごで、のんびりするどころではない。
