〜得る・〜得ない

Pattern

Expresses that something is possible (得る) or impossible (得ない). Refers to whether an outcome or action can realistically happen.

Often used in formal or written contexts. Indicates possibility or impossibility of an event or result. Not used for ability based on personal skill.

Attach to the verb stem (ます-form without ます).

このままの状況では、事故が起こり得る。

このままのじょうきょうでは、じこがおこりうる。

In this situation, an accident could happen.

人間が火星に住むなんて、今はまだ考え得ない。

にんげんがかせいにすむなんて、いまはまだかんがええない。

The idea of humans living on Mars is still unthinkable right now.

このようなミスは十分に起こり得ます。

このようなミスはじゅうぶんにおこりえます。

Such a mistake is entirely possible.

この証拠が間違っているとは、とても信じ得ない。

このしょうこがまちがっているとは、とてもしんじえない。

It's hard to believe that this evidence is incorrect.
