Explanation
Expresses that, due to social norms, moral obligation, or psychological resistance, one cannot (or should not) do something, even if it were technically possible.
Usage
Often used to show that a person refrains from doing something because it would be socially inappropriate or go against personal conscience.
Formation
Attach to the plain dictionary form of verbs. Not used for physical or technical impossibility.
Examples
病気の友人を一人にして帰るわけにはいかない。
びょうきのゆうじんをひとりにしてかえるわけにはいかない。I can’t just leave my sick friend alone and go home.
秘密を打ち明けられたからには、他の人に話すわけにもいかない。
ひみつをうちあけられたからには、ほかのひとにはなすわけにもいかない。Since I was confided a secret, I can't tell it to others.
今日は大事な会議があるので、遅刻するわけにはいかない。
きょうはだいじなかいぎがあるので、ちこくするわけにはいかない。There’s an important meeting today, so I can't afford to be late.
親に心配をかけたくないから、泣くわけにもいかない。
おやにしんぱいをかけたくないから、なくわけにもいかない。I don’t want to worry my parents, so I can’t cry.
