Pattern

Used to politely express that the speaker cannot do something due to circumstances or their position. It’s not about physical or technical inability.

Often used in formal situations to decline or refuse politely. Common with verbs like 'decide', 'accept', 'agree', or 'respond'.

Attach to the verb stem (ます-form without ます).

その条件では、参加をお引き受けしかねます。

そのじょうけんでは、さんかをおひきうけしかねます。

Under those conditions, I’m afraid I cannot accept participation.

あなたの考え方には理解しかねる部分があります。

あなたのかんがえかたにはりかいしかねるぶぶんがあります。

There are parts of your way of thinking that I find difficult to understand.

今すぐの回答はいたしかねますので、後ほどご連絡いたします。

いますぐのかいとうはいたしかねますので、のちほどごれんらくいたします。

I’m unable to give you an immediate answer, so I’ll contact you later.

申し訳ありませんが、その要求には応じかねます。
