Pattern

Used when the speaker strongly denies something, expressing that there is absolutely no reason or possibility for it to be true.

Often used to emphasize that something is impossible or unthinkable.

Attach to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns (with appropriate nominal connectors).

こんな短時間でこの量の仕事を終わらせるなんて、彼にできるわけがない。

こんなたんじかんでこのりょうのしごとをおわらせるなんて、かれにできるわけがない。

There’s no way he can finish this amount of work in such a short time.

あの優しい人がそんなひどいことを言うわけがないよ。

あのやさしいひとがそんなひどいことをいうわけがないよ。

There’s no way such a kind person would say something that awful.

このカレーは有名なシェフが作ったんだよ。おいしくないわけがない。

このかれーはゆうめいなしぇふがつくったんだよ。おいしくないわけがない。

This curry was made by a famous chef. There’s no way it’s not delicious.
