Explanation
Indicates a role, qualification, status, or point of view from which someone acts or something exists.
Usage
Used to express what function or position someone or something holds in a given situation. Common in phrases like 'as a teacher', 'as a member', 'as a city', etc.
Formation
Attach directly to a noun.
Examples
彼は引退後、コーチとして若手選手を育てている。
かれはいんたいご、こーちとしてわかてせんしゅをそだてている。After retiring, he trains young players as a coach.
京都は日本の歴史的な都市として知られている。
きょうとはにほんのれきしてきなとしとしてしられている。Kyoto is known as a historic city of Japan.
コーヒーは昔から薬として使われていたこともある。
こーひーはむかしからくすりとしてつかわれていたこともある。Coffee was once used as a medicine.
彼女は教師としても優れている。
かのじょはきょうしとしてもすぐれている。She’s also excellent as a teacher.
