Pattern

Indicates that something almost happened, but in the end, it didn’t. Often used to express a near miss.

Commonly used with words like '危うく' or 'うっかり' to describe situations that nearly ended in a serious or undesirable result.

Attach to the plain or negative form of a verb.

うっかり寝過ごして、授業に遅れるところだった。

うっかりねすごして、じゅぎょうにおくれるところだった。

I almost overslept and was late for class.

赤信号を無視するところだったけど、ギリギリで止まった。

あかしんごうをむしするところだったけど、ぎりぎりでとまった。

I almost ran the red light but managed to stop just in time.

もう少しで財布を忘れるところだった。

もうすこしでさいふをわすれるところだった。

I almost forgot my wallet.
