Used to define or explain the meaning of a word or concept. It introduces a topic that will be explained or interpreted.

Formal expression. Common in writing and academic explanations. Often followed by a phrase like 〜という意味だ or 〜のことである.

Attach to a noun. Followed by a sentence that defines or explains the noun.

「校訓」とはどういう意味ですか。

こうくんとはどういういみですか。

What does 'school motto' mean?

「増悪」とは医学用語で、症状がもっと悪くなることを言います。

ぞうあくとはいがくようごで、しょうじょうがもっとわるくなることをいいます。

‘Zouaku’ is a medical term that means symptoms are getting worse.
