Used to describe what would happen if a certain situation becomes real.

More realistic or formal than としたら. Often used when assuming an actual event.

Attach to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, or nouns.

海外で働くとなったら、まずビザを準備しなければならない。

かいがいではたらくとなったら、まずびざをじゅんびしなければならない。

If you end up working abroad, the first thing you need is a visa.

家を買うとなると、かなりのお金が必要ですね。

いえをかうとなると、かなりのおかねがひつようですね。

If it comes to buying a house, you’ll need quite a bit of money.
