Pattern

Used when the speaker wants to express something with uncertainty, listing multiple possible expressions that may all apply to a situation.

Used when it is hard to describe something precisely or when trying to explain from different angles.

Attach to verbs, adjectives, or nouns in plain form.

彼は優しいというか、頼りになるというか、とにかく安心感がある人です。

かれはやさしいというか、たよりになるというか、とにかくあんしんかんがあるひとです。

He’s kind—or maybe dependable—you just feel at ease around him.

この映画は、怖いというか不気味というか、なんとも言えない雰囲気だった。

このえいがは、こわいというかぶきみというか、なんともいえないふんいきだった。

This movie was scary—or rather eerie—it had an indescribable atmosphere.
