Pattern

Used when the actual situation is different from what might be expected based on the statement before it.

Often used to contrast an assumption with a more modest or limited reality.

Attach to the plain form of a verb, adjective, or noun.

兄は医者といっても、研究が中心で患者はほとんど診ていない。

あにはいしゃといっても、けんきゅうがちゅうしんでかんじゃはほとんどみていない。

My brother may be a doctor, but he mainly does research and rarely sees patients.

キャンプに行くといっても、コテージに泊まるからテントは使わないよ。

きゃんぷにいくといっても、こてーじにとまるからてんとはつかわないよ。

We're going camping, but we're staying in a cottage, so we won’t use a tent.

毎日運動しているといっても、ストレッチ程度なんです。

まいにちうんどうしているといっても、すとれっちていどなんです。

I say I exercise every day, but it's really just stretching.
