Explanation
Expresses that the same state or action has continued from a certain point in the past up to the present.
Usage
Often used to emphasize continuity. Not used with future events. このかた is more formal or literary.
Formation
Attach to the て-form of a verb. Indicates a past starting point and ongoing result.
Examples
転職して以来、毎日がとても充実している。
てんしょくしていらい、まいにちがとてもしゅうじつしている。Since I changed jobs, every day has been very fulfilling.
事故にあってこのかた、夜道を歩くのが怖くなった。
じこにあってこのかた、よみちをあるくのがこわくなった。Ever since the accident, I’ve been afraid of walking at night.
卒業して以来、一度も母校を訪ねていない。
そつぎょうしていらい、いちどもぼこうをたずねていない。I haven’t visited my old school even once since graduating.
