〜て以来・〜てこのかた

Pattern

Expresses that the same state or action has continued from a certain point in the past up to the present.

Often used to emphasize continuity. Not used with future events. このかた is more formal or literary.

Attach to the て-form of a verb. Indicates a past starting point and ongoing result.

転職して以来、毎日がとても充実している。

てんしょくしていらい、まいにちがとてもしゅうじつしている。

Since I changed jobs, every day has been very fulfilling.

事故にあってこのかた、夜道を歩くのが怖くなった。

じこにあってこのかた、よみちをあるくのがこわくなった。

Ever since the accident, I’ve been afraid of walking at night.

卒業して以来、一度も母校を訪ねていない。

そつぎょうしていらい、いちどもぼこうをたずねていない。

I haven’t visited my old school even once since graduating.
