〜しかない・〜よりほかない

Pattern

Indicates that there is no other option but to do something. Often expresses resignation or necessity.

Used when there’s no choice but to take a certain action. しかない is more colloquial; よりほかない is more formal or written.

Attach to the dictionary form of verbs.

この状況では、待つしかない。

このじょうきょうでは、まつしかない。

In this situation, we have no choice but to wait.

交通機関が止まっているなら、歩いて帰るよりほかない。

こうつうきかんがとまっているなら、あるいてかえるよりほかない。

If public transport is down, we’ll just have to walk home.
