Pattern

Indicates that an action is happening at that very moment.

Often used with actions of relatively short duration (e.g., writing, talking, studying). Frequently followed by unexpected interruptions.

Attach to the ている-form of a verb or a noun with の.

田中さんは今レポートを書いている最中だから、あとで話そう。

たなかさんはいまレポートをかいているさいちゅうだから、あとではなそう。

Tanaka is in the middle of writing a report, so let's talk later.

散歩している最中に、急に犬が走り出した。

さんぽしているさいちゅうに、きゅうにいぬがはしりだした。

While I was taking a walk, a dog suddenly started running.

試験の最中に、隣の人の携帯が鳴った。

しけんのさいちゅうに、となりのひとのけいたいがなった。

During the exam, the phone of the person next to me rang.
