Pattern

A formal expression meaning 'not only ... but also'. Used to include additional elements beyond the stated one.

Often used in written language or formal speech. Similar to だけでなく but more formal. The following sentence often contains も to add more information.

Attach to nouns or to the plain form of verbs and adjectives. With な-adjectives and nouns, use である before のみならず.

このプロジェクトは国内のみならず、海外からも注目されている。

このプロジェクトはこくないのみならず、かいがいからもちゅうもくされている。

This project is attracting attention not only domestically but also from overseas.

彼は数学のみならず、物理や化学にも優れている。

かれはすうがくのみならず、ぶつりやかがくにもすぐれている。

He excels not only in mathematics but also in physics and chemistry.

この本は子供のみならず、大人にも人気があります。

このほんはこどものみならず、おとなにもにんきがあります。

This book is popular not only with children but also with adults.
