Explanation
Indicates that not only the stated matter is true, but an additional unexpected or significant fact is also true.
Usage
Often used to emphasize surprising or notable additions. The second clause frequently contains も to express 'not only ... but also'.
Formation
Attach to nouns or the plain form of verbs and adjectives. With な-adjectives and nouns, use である before ばかりか.
Examples
彼は英語ばかりか、中国語も流暢に話せる。
かれはえいごばかりか、ちゅうごくごもりゅうちょうにはなせる。He speaks not only English but also Chinese fluently.
この地域は夏は暑いばかりか、湿度も非常に高い。
このちいきはなつはあついばかりか、しつどもひじょうにたかい。This region is not only hot in summer but also extremely humid.
その映画は面白いばかりか、社会問題について考えさせられる内容だった。
そのえいがはおもしろいばかりか、しゃかいもんだいについてかんがえさせられるないようだった。That movie was not only entertaining but also made me think about social issues.
