Pattern

Indicates that a situation or condition extends over a wide range (time, space, quantity, etc.).

Used to express coverage across a wide span of time, area, or categories. Often seen with words related to time, distance, categories, or events.

Attach to a noun that represents a span or range. 'にわたる' modifies a following noun.

台風の影響で、10キロにわたって停電が続いた。

たいふうのえいきょうで、じゅっキロにわたってていでんがつづいた。

Due to the typhoon, the blackout continued over a span of 10 kilometers.

彼は幅広い分野にわたって、研究を行っている。

かれははばひろいぶんやにわたって、けんきゅうをおこなっている。

He conducts research across a wide range of fields.

５日間にわたるイベントが盛況のうちに終了した。
