Explanation

Indicates that as one thing changes, another thing changes in response. Often translated as 'as ... progresses' or 'in proportion to'.

Usage

Used to describe natural or proportional changes. につれて is more often used with gradual natural changes, while にしたがって can also be used for more abstract trends or developments.

Formation

Attach to the dictionary form of change-related verbs (e.g., 増える, 進む, 上がる).

Examples

年を取るにつれて、体力が落ちてきた。

としをとるにつれて、たいりょくがおちてきた。

As I got older, my physical strength declined.

物価が上がるにしたがって、生活が苦しくなってきた。

ぶっかがあがるにしたがって、せいかつがくるしくなってきた。

As prices rise, daily life has become harder.

スピードが上がるにつれて、音も大きくなる。

スピードがあがるにつれて、おともおおきくなる。

As the speed increases, the noise gets louder.
