Indicates that something is no more than or merely that. Downplays the importance or scale of something.

Used to express modesty or to dismiss something as being insignificant or limited.

Attach to nouns or plain form; use である with nouns and na-adjectives.

私は一社員にすぎません。会社の方針を決める立場ではありません。

わたしはいちしゃいんにすぎません。かいしゃのほうしんをきめるたちばではありません。

I'm just an ordinary employee. I have no say in company policy.

それは一つの意見にすぎない。他にも考え方はある。

それはひとつのいけんにすぎない。ほかにもかんがえかたはある。

That’s just one opinion. There are other ways of thinking too.
