Explanation
Expresses that something is different from what is expected, considering a certain fact or standard.
Usage
Often used with specific numbers or facts (e.g. 'for a child', 'for February', 'for 1000 yen') to express that something is surprisingly different from what one would expect.
Formation
Attach to nouns or plain-form verbs (including た-form).
Examples
今日は2月にしては暖かいですね。
きょうはにがつにしてはあたたかいですね。It’s quite warm for February today.
このかばんは1,000円にしては丈夫だし、おしゃれですね。
このかばんはいっせんえんにしてはじょうぶだし、おしゃれですね。This bag is pretty sturdy and stylish for just 1,000 yen.
子どもが作ったにしては、かなり上手にできている。
こどもがつくったにしては、かなりじょうずにできている。For something made by a child, it’s really well done.
彼は初心者にしてはかなり詳しいですね。
かれはしょしんしゃにしてはかなりくわしいですね。For a beginner, he’s pretty knowledgeable.
