Pattern

Used to express strong personal conviction or certainty. Implies 'of course', 'definitely', or 'surely'.

Common in spoken Japanese. Often used to assert one's belief subjectively, sometimes in contrast to someone else’s opinion.

Attach to the plain form of verbs and adjectives. With na-adjectives and nouns, use だ + にきまっている.

こんなに高い服なんて、彼女が買えるわけがない。誰かにもらったにきまっている。

こんなにたかいふくなんて、かのじょがかえるわけがない。だれかにもらったにきまっている。

There’s no way she could afford such expensive clothes—she must have received them from someone.

あのチームが勝つにきまっている。

あのちーむがかつにきまっている。

That team is definitely going to win.
