- N + に限って
Explanation
Used to express special or exceptional cases, often in contrast to the usual. It has three main uses: (A) unexpected behavior or situation, (B) unfortunate coincidences, (C) strong belief that something negative would never happen.
Usage
Use A: To say 'only this time is different.' Use B: 'Bad things always happen at the worst time.' Use C: Expressing strong trust or belief, often followed by a negative result that contradicts expectations.
Formation
Attach to nouns. Sentence meaning depends on context – expressing exceptionality, bad timing, or denial of wrongdoing.
Examples
普段は遅刻しない彼が、今日に限って遅れてきた。
ふだんはちこくしないかれが、きょうにかぎっておくれてきた。He’s never late, but today of all days, he was late.
出かけようとした日に限って、大雨が降るんだよね。
でかけようとしたひにかぎって、おおあめがふるんだよね。It always rains on the exact day I plan to go out.
こんな大事な会議の日に限って、パソコンが壊れてしまった。
こんなだいじなかいぎのひにかぎって、パソコンがこわれてしまった。My computer broke down—of course it had to happen on such an important meeting day.
あの先生に限って、そんな間違いをするはずがないと思います。
あのせんせいにかぎって、そんなまちがいをするはずがないとおもいます。That teacher, of all people, would never make such a mistake.
彼に限って、そんな無責任なことを言うとは信じられない。
かれにかぎって、そんなむせきにんなことをいうとはしんじられない。I can’t believe that he, of all people, would say something so irresponsible.
