Explanation
Indicates that unless a certain condition is met, something cannot happen or be realized.
Usage
Often used when stating that something won't work out or proceed unless a certain prerequisite is fulfilled.
Formation
Attach to the negative form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns.
Examples
説明を聞かないことには、判断できません。
せつめいをきかないことには、はんだんできません。Unless we hear the explanation, we can't make a judgment.
この薬が効果的でないことには、治療を続ける意味がない。
このくすりがこうかてきでないことには、ちりょうをつづけるいみがない。If this medicine isn’t effective, there’s no point in continuing the treatment.
